For the Default Website in hiawatha.conf, I have:
WebsiteRoot = G:\SiteName
This works.

When I have:
WebsiteRoot = G:\ (or just G:)
when starting Hiawatha, there is a complaint that this line has a syntax error.

Is there a better syntax?

For security reasons, Hiawatha does not allow a disk's root directory to be the webroot.

If I missed it, sorry. If it's not mentioned in the manual pages, please accept my suggestion to add the mention of it into every configuration item that is associated with a directory path.
