Puzzling error with both CGI and FastCGI

I've been using Hiawatha for many years now and I'm quite familiar with the installation/tuning of hiawatha.conf and php ini files when it comes to extending URI lengths. However, this time I'm having an issue that I cannot figure out.
When sending a large URI, sometimes (not always) I get: error while sending data to FastCGI server
If I try with CGI instead, I get: error while executing CGI
However, in both cases I see *nothing* in the php logs. Do you have any idea on what could be causing this?
