while experimenting with data-analysis tools i ended up picking hiawatha logs as my field of research
there i noticed the system.log file is not consistent, upon restart the fields are $1 | $2 while per normal they read $1 | $2 | $3
would it be possible to prepend 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1 upon restart in the system log ? this would avoid the need for correcting this before absorbing the log for analysis

Sounds fair enough. Will be implemented in the next release.
